It was recently reported that a group of Western countries has accused China of being behind the hacking of Microsoft Exchange.

Indeed, the statement made by these countries is blaming the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) for malicious cyber activity and for undermining global stability and security.

The attack on Microsoft impacted around 30,000 organizations globally and is stated to be from a Chinese cyber-espionage group that exploited a vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange, hence, giving the hackers remote access to the email inboxes.

The group is said to be state-sponsored and operating out of China. However, China refutes any accusation and declared that it opposes all forms of cybercrime.

At the latest Microsoft Inspire 2019 last week, 21Vianet blue cloud (hereafter “21V Blue Cloud”) announced they are teaming up with AggreSmart Solution Platform as their new solution partners. They hope to reinforce the Cloud Landing in China (CLIC) strategy and develop greater cloud integration into the Chinese market.

21V BlueCloud has been the driving force behind the Microsoft cloud ecosystem as it provides secure and sustainable cloud operations at a high-performance level.

Due to the CLIC strategy, China has received over 40 domestic and foreign solutions. These match with Microsoft’s cloud solution by enabling customers to move forward in digital transformation, whilst always ensuring security and compliance.

Making partners overseas

To implement themselves further into the overseas market, 21V BlueCloud signed with four more partners in cloud business. These being: MicroStrategy, Beijing Infoquick Global Connection Tech Ltd. (hereafter “Infoquick”), Quest Software Inc. (hereafter “Quest”), and Shanghai Akmii Information Limited (hereafter “Akmii”).

It’s hoped that by partnering with these specific companies, Microsoft’s cloud company will bring forth higher quality solutions for email content file saving, workflow management, SD-WAN to enterprise customers and business intelligence and analytics.

Customer benefits

Herbie Lam, General Manager of Greater China at Quest Software Inc says: “We are delighted to expand our partnership with 21V Blue Cloud to bring our customers the benefits of Quest Platform Management solution at Microsoft Azure platform in China. This announcement reinforces the work we have collaborated lately, brings our customers new end-to-end offers and innovative services and enables them to solve business challenges.”

“As global data growth has exploded, helping our customers to transform data into real-world intelligence and answer their tough business questions has been our top priority,” said Zhao Zhiheng, General Manager of MicroStrategy Greater China. “By cooperating with 21V Blue Cloud, we combine cloud solutions with intelligence analytics perfectly, provide convenient and fast deployment to customers and bring them the value of data mining.”

Microsoft Azure, which is part of 21Vianet, was started in China in 2013 and assisted with compliant international public cloud operations in the country.

Google is hoping to offer its cloud services to Chinese companies Tencent Holdings and Inspur Group.

Competing against its rivals Amazon and Microsoft, Google is looking to partner with major Chinese cloud providers and deliver services such as Google Drive and Google Docs to the country.

According to Bloomberg, Google was in talks with Chinese firms at the beginning of 2018 saying, if the company was to accept its offer, it will create a Chinese version of its search engine that blocks out sensitive information including government documentation.

Following this, the tech giant also revealed that it would hire a Shanghai-based employee to manage their cloud operations.

“It is a coup for the Chinese government and Communist Party to force Google – the biggest search engine in the world – to comply with their onerous censorship requirements, and sets a worrying precedent for other companies seeking to do business in China without compromising their core values,” wrote six US lawmakers in a letter to Google’s Chief Executive Officer, Sundar Pichai.

It’s unclear if the plans will proceed following trade tensions between the US and China.

On Tuesday, Amazon unveiled it will be expanding its cloud computing business in China, in a bid to win shares in the “highly regulated” market.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will begin offering customer services in partnership with a Chinese company called Ningxia Western Cloud Data Technology (NWCD).

Amazon said in a statement: “AWS has formed a strategic technology collaboration with NWCD, and NWCD operates and provides services from the AWS China Ningxia Region, in full compliance with Chinese regulations.”

The move came a month after AWS said it would sell hardware assets of its Beijing-registered cloud unit for up to US$302.06million.

According to Synergy Research Group, Chinese firms account for roughly 80% of total cloud services revenue in China.

In a bid to compete with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google has opened data centres in 4 countries and plans to launch in 5 more before 2019.

According to Yahoo, Google’s absence to China is costing the company business and making it harder to challenge AWS and Microsoft Azure in the rapidly expanding cloud infrastructure market.

By 2021, China’s market for cloud infrastructure and software is estimated to be more than US$9.8billion from US$2.4billion last year, according to IDC; with AWS and Microsoft partnering with local company, Beijing Sinnet Technology, for data centres in Shanghai and Beijing.

According to Synergy Research, Google already has a big gap to close, being fourth in global cloud infrastructure with 5% of the market, trailing AWS, azure and IBM.

“Google have a lot of other fish to fry”

Analyst at Gartner, Lydia Leong, said to Yahoo: “Google today is in so few countries –They have a lot of other fish to go fry.”

Google attempted to make a radical change in its operations in China, through breaking the country’s practices of censoring internet content by shutting down its local service and redirecting visitors from Google.cn to the uncensored Google.com.hk in Hong Kong, but the Chinese government objected to it, according to Yahoo.

Senior research manager at IDC, Richard Zhao, said: “We heard about Google’s plan of returning to China but so far there is not any clear message. They have to cooperate with local partners to run public cloud services.”

According to volume 22 of the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report, Microsoft cloud user accounts saw a 300% increase in cyber attacks over the past year.

The report said: “A large majority of these compromises are the result of weak, guessable passwords and poor password management, followed by targeted phishing attacks and breaches of third-party services.”

According to the post, over two-thirds of Azure attacks came from IP addresses, with 32.5% from the US and 35.1% from China.

The remainder of attacks compromised 116 countries and regions, with Korea only representing 3.1% of attacks.

“Cloud services such as Microsoft Azure are perennial targets for attackers seeking to compromise virtual machines and other services, and these attacks are taking place across the globe,” the report said.

The highest ransomware rates occurred in Europe, with the Czech Republic representing 0.17% of all attacks, and Italy, Hungary and Spain similarly represented 0.14%.

The lowest ransomware encounter rates occurred in Japan (0.012%), China (0.014%), and the United States (0.02%), according to the report.

The report added: “Microsoft recommends that victims of ransomware infections do not pay the so-called fine.

“Ransomware is distributed by malicious attackers, not legitimate authorities, and paying the ransom is no guarantee that the attacker will restore the affected computer to a usable state.”

The report also documented the rise of ransomware, noting that the trend itself has been felt in different degrees based on geographic location.

A new app that allows “not just the rich and famous” to hire a personal bodyguard is set to be launched in northeast China.

The app called Jinyiqei is set to launch this September in Qingdao, providing an “Uber-like” service, connecting companies and individuals citywide with more than 50,000 staff from 47 security companies.

The app is similar to taxi applications, with app users being able to see the availability of bodyguards across the city in real-time.

According to Qingdao News, it provides bodyguards for anyone who feels unsafe, particularly those concerned about transporting valuables.

One of the app’s developers, Li Shangshang, told the BBC: “The bodyguards are former military personnel, and have been required to present their ID cards and military discharge certificates of permits in order to qualify for the app.

“They have also been required to take manners and etiquette training classes, and must wear a uniform at work.”

The price range of a bodyguard is expected to be between 70 and 200 yuan an hour.

By 2020, Chinese and Indian tech giants will take over 50% of all global mobile phone subscribers, according to the GSM Association (GSMA), a trade body that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide.

According to Computer Weekly, there will be roughly 753 million new mobile phone subscribers worldwide.

GSMA expect that by the end of the decade, China will account for 21% (155 million) of those subscribers, and India will account for 27% (206 million).

“Led by India and China, Asia’s mobile industry will be the main engine of global subscriber growth for the remainder of the decade, connecting almost half a billion new customers across the region by 2020,” said Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA.

“We are also seeing a dramatic shift to mobile broadband networks, particularly 4G, which is providing a platform for a rich range of innovative new services across both developed and emerging markets in the region. Meanwhile, advanced operators in Asia are set to become among the first in the world to launch commercial 5G networks before the end of the decade,” he added.

GSMA also noted that there is going to be a 3.1 billion increase in mobile subscribers from Asia-Pacific (APAC), accounting for around 66% of global growth to 75% by 2020.
