In a move to make it easier for customers to move to the cloud from traditional data centres, cloud service provider, iland, is adding new features to its complementary cloud assessment tool.

Its hoped that the new characteristics will be able to predict requirements for workloads, applications, and production sites.

The security application and cloud service for the VMware company introduced a catalyst to assists businesses model and right size cloud requirements for disaster recovery, cloud backup or migration without over-provisioning or under-provisioning.

Migrating to cloud services

Firms that move from traditional data centres to cloud-based infrastructures need to predict resources based on the number of times an application has been used. Compatibility and size are also key considerations when thinking about cloud service migration.

“Whether it’s your first time moving to the cloud or if you’re adding more workloads and applications, the last thing you want to do is worry about guessing if your environment is capable of leveraging the cloud and the cost to get there,” said iland senior vice president Dante Orsini. “iland Catalyst removes that stress for customers around the world.”

Added points

New features of the iland Catalyst cloud assessment tool include the ability to calculate annual long-term retention objectives on cloud-based backup scenarios as well as support to provide Catalyst capabilities for both Windows and Mac environments.

“When working with new customers and prospects, intelligence and insights are the top competitive differentiators,” said Chris McDuffie, vice president of cloud architecture for Structured, a solution provider of secure, cloud-connected digital infrastructure in Portland. “iland Catalyst gives us the ability to know exactly what resources our customers need to make their move to the cloud a success.”

Cloud native application firm, Aqua Security, reveals its latest native security platform will be available on VMware Cloud Marketplace. The company hopes to provide a solution for securing containerised applications from build to runtime on Pivotal PKS and VMware Enterprise PKS.

Third party solutions and services are available through the Cloud Marketplace, which can be used across private, public and cloud environments.  Solutions can be easily published for VMware customers across platforms once they have been validated.

Clients can access third party solutions from their cloud environments. They can also use features like analytics, reporting, and notifications.

Choosing Aqua Security

Aqua CSP was chosen as a partner for its ability to address the challenges of control, visibility, and isolation in container environments. It was also selected for its skill in being non-intrusive to DevOps practices.

Using Aqua CSP on Pivotal PKS and VMware brings enterprise users an end-to-end security solution which includes using virtual patching to prevent and detect vulnerabilities. It also scans images for vulnerabilities, malicious code and enforcement of image integrity throughout the software development cycle.

Along with these points, it’s hoped that Kubernetes clusters will also have security assessments. Runtime controls will be monitored to look at container activity in real time, based on custom policies and machine-learned behavioural profiles, to alert on or block suspicious actions and processes.

A new way of working

“Aqua Security is very excited to be a part of the VMware Cloud Marketplace,” said Upesh Patel, VP of Business Development for Aqua Security. “We believe that this marketplace will make it easy for VMware customers to deploy enterprise grade software in a complex computing environment.”

Patel goes on to add that, “Customers can build mission critical applications on Pivotal or VMware PKS and will be able to secure their entire application lifecycle in a scalable way, while automating DevSecOps processes.”

Milin Desai, GM, Cloud Services, VMware also discusses his excitement regarding the collaboration. He says, “We are pleased to see Aqua Security CSP available on VMware Cloud Marketplace,”

Validated technologies, such as Aqua CSP, enable IT teams to reduce cost, increase efficiency, and create operational consistency across cloud environments. We’re excited to work with partners such as Aqua Security to empower customers to fully leverage their cloud investments.” He continued.

Software virtualisation company, VMware, has disclosed their plan to buy start-up company Avi Networks for an unannounced price in a plan to bridge the gap between NetOps and DevOps.

VMware provide platform virtualisation software and services as well as cloud computing and were founded in 1998. Whilst Avi Networks is a load balancing service that “delivers a 100% software approach to multi-cloud application services”.

As a start-up company, Avi’s aim is to do what it can to provide a solution to load baring appliances that were created in an age when appliances didn’t have higher workloads and that relied on various platforms like we have today, such as Google Cloud Platform, Azure and AWS.

The company has created a tool that enables a balance between software resource requirements (which is based on need or location) and keeping an eye on the results and the data behind the requirements needed.

How will the collaboration work?

There is already an integration of VMware technologies on Avi’s radar, which includes VMware NSX and VMware vCenter. However, part of the work that VMware does is to assist businesses with managing their infrastructure in a consistent way, which they do on-prem or through the cloud. By working with Avi, they will be able to work more on the load-baring side of things, making it easier for them and their clients to handle work.

Senior VP and GM for VMware, Tom Gillis, spoke of the ultimate aim of the collaboration to be of simplicity and efficiency. This is because one major issue that currently affects the deployment of an application outside of public cloud computing is that it can take days or even sometimes weeks.

He commented on the partnership through a statement by saying: “This acquisition will further advance our Virtual Cloud Network vision, where a software-defined distributed network architecture spans all infrastructure and ties all pieces together with the automation and programmability found in the public cloud.

“Combining Avi Networks with VMware NSX will further enable organisations to respond to new opportunities and threats, create new business models, and deliver services to all applications and data, wherever they are located.”

As well as dealing with more of a load balancing software, part of VMware’s aim is also to include a Web Application Firewall (WAF) as well as a service mesh to its pre-existing visualisation software. WAF technology will then be used to further secure data centre traffic.

Avi’s co-founders also expressed their excitement for the partnership in a blog post that reads: “The decision to join forces with VMware represents a perfect alignment of vision, products, technology, go-to-market, and culture. We will continue to deliver on our mission to help our customers modernise application services by accelerating multi-cloud deployments with automation and self-service.”

Avi was founded in 2012 and according to CrunchBase Data, have already raised $115 Million through investors such as Greylock and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

The new deal is thought to take place anytime between now and August.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will be launching its own on-premises IT environment, AWS Outposts, according to a recent press release.

AWS Outposts platforms will bring AWS cloud software on-premises.

AWS Outposts will allow customers and enterprises to run compute and storage on-premises, using the same native infrastructure used in the AWS cloud.

The company said that there will be two options available at launch in 2019, including a version that will operate AWS cloud services natively, while the second option will run the VMware Cloudon AWS.

The VMware Software Defined Data Centre (SDDC) will deliver compute, storage, and networking infrastructure on-premises, and is managed as a service from the same console as VMware Cloud on AWS.

In 2017, AWS collaborated with VMware Cloud to introduce the VMware cloud on AWS, giving a number of companies who are on virtualised VMware the ability to use VMware tools and “manage their infrastructure on AWS”.

For customers who prefer to use the same API, and the same hardware on-premises, they will be able to use a AWS native variant of AWS Outposts, the statement read.

“These customers will have the opportunity to run other software with native AWS Outposts, starting with a new integrated offering from VMware called VMware Cloud Foundation for EC2, which will feature popular VMware technologies and services that work across VMware, and Amazon EC2 environments, like NSX, VMware AppDefense, and VMware vRealize Automation,” the company explained in a statement.

“Customers are telling us they don’t want a hybrid experience that attempts to recreate a stunted version of a cloud on-premises, because it’s perpetually out of sync with the cloud version and requires a lot of heavy lifting, managing custom hardware, different control planes, different tooling, and manual software updates.”

It went on to further explain: “There just isn’t a lot of value in that type of on-premises offering and that’s why these solutions aren’t getting much traction.”

According to a recent survey, the global government cloud market is expected to reach US$49.2billion by 2023.

The market research report says the cloud market is to grow rapidly because of the increased reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO) and rise in government inclination towards digital transformation.

The government cloud market is categorised into product and service, where the market for products is estimated to generate higher revenue for government cloud, due to its high adoption owing to the increased awareness of its benefits.

However, during the forecast period, the market for services is expected to exhibit faster growth. This can be attributed to the fact that the quality and delivery time of services are controlled by certain predefined service level agreements (SLA), which makes processes more efficient and transparent.

Data losses in government agencies

The government cloud products are further categorised into storage, disaster recovery, identity access management (IAM), risk compliance management (RCM), and others.

During the forecast period, disaster recovery solution is projected to witness the highest growth in the global government cloud market, with CAGR of 15.7%.

This growth can be attributed to the mounting demand for applying the backup plans offered by disaster recovery, to prevent transaction and data losses in government agencies. Also, government agencies are increasing their focus on IAM, due to the rising need for top-notch cloud-based authentication procedures.

North America is estimated to contribute the highest revenue, accounting for nearly 34% to the global government cloud market in 2017 and is expected to generate a revenue of more than $15,000 million by 2023, driven by the high demand and huge investments in cloud-based solutions from government agencies.

Growing pace of technology

With the growing pace of technology, ICT executives in the government sector have started looking for sophisticated network solutions that enable them to react quickly, smoothly, and efficiently, to public concerns and also at the same time keep growing pressures to the minimum.

Government cloud, helping such executives in adapting to changes with less troublesome and expense, is one of the major driving the government cloud market. The improved agility and adaptability through the adoption of cloud by government agencies include further motivating factors such as virtualised resources, elastic services, faster deployment, and increased flexibility.

Some of the key players operating in the government cloud market are Google, IBM, Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, Salesforce, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, VMware and Intel Corporation.

Geographically, North America has been the largest eDiscovery market, accounting for more than 65% of the global revenue in 2016, whereas the sales in Asia-Pacific are expected to witness the fastest growth, during the forecast period.

Technological advancements

Various factors that have influenced the eDiscovery market in North America in the recent past include the change in policies after the election of Donald Trump as the President, high-paced technological advancements, and various other policy changes related to antitrust law.

The growth in the Asia-Pacific market will be led by factors such as the surge in digitalisation within the legal sector, advancement in new data analytics and retrieving technologies by regional players, and the growth in investment in eDiscovery solutions.

Cloud SCM market has been growing at the highest pace in Asia-Pacific on account of surging industrialization in the region, and the growing adoption of automation among enterprises.

Growing e-commerce market coupled with increasing focus on reducing the ownership cost is the other factors driving the cloud SCM market in the region. The regional governments have also been supporting the industrial growth, which is being translated into the growth of cloud SCM market in the region.

Scalr today announced the results of its 2018 Enterprise Cloud Management Landscape Survey, uncovering new insights about multi-cloud adoption, management and concerns related to cost, security, automation and self-service.

According to the survey, over 75% of enterprises are either currently using or evaluating a cloud management platform (CMP) to balance the complex needs of multiple enterprise groups and create secure, cost-effective cloud environments.

Despite this, 35% indicated they already have a CMP in place, with 40% of respondents saying they actively evaluate cloud management solutions, showing a clear acceleration of the cloud management market.

Security concerns

Security stood out as the main concern for enterprises adopting cloud, with 62% ranking it as the number one concern.

While 50% of enterprises ranked disaster recovery as the top reason for implementing multiple clouds.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) remains the most popular cloud platform, with 25.9% of enterprises using it compared to 23.9% for Microsoft Azure and 20.9% for VMware.

Hybrid cloud strategy

However, Microsoft Azure users are more likely than AWS and VMware users to leverage those platforms for both development and production environments. 88% of enterprise Azure users use it for both, followed by 73% for VMware and 72% for AWS.

Furthermore, 83% of respondents are focusing on a hybrid cloud strategy, composed of multiple private and public clouds.

Hybrid cloud is already deployed at 32% of enterprises, whereas another 17% are about to deploy and 27% are evaluating doing so.

Sebastian Stadil, founder and CEO of Scalr, commented: “It’s no secret that enterprises have turned to the cloud to innovate faster. We wanted to dive deeper to see how they’re using different cloud platforms and dealing with the complexities that come from multi-cloud environments.

Cost control

“As the Scalr survey indicates, as more businesses use a variety of cloud platforms in enterprise-wide environments, challenges that were able to be addressed during the initial wave of niche cloud deployments, like security, are again top concerns in this emerging ‘Cloud 2.0’ world.

“The vast majority of enterprises are looking to cloud management platforms to provide the flexibility needed for innovation along with the policies needed for security and cost control.”

The survey queried more than 500 IT leaders at large enterprises.

The global DevOps PaaS (Platform as a Service) market is projected to grow between the years of 2016 and 2020 at a CAPR of 19.42%.

New research from analyst firm Research and Markets shows that DevOps is shifting from being an emerging trend in the IT market to one that is gaining popularity at a rapid pace.

Why is DevOps platform market seeing such growth?

Thanks to providing a holistic IT environment for the automation of software development processes, DevOps tools are becoming much more popular within the IT industry, in turn increasing the need for a standardised platform.

The need for a standardised platform

According to the report, software development processes are now requiring standardised platforms in order to bridge the gap between software developers and operational teams.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from the research team said: “PaaS is built where the entire IT environment is designed to support test and development processes. Instances of PaaS on public cloud include IBM Bluemix, CloudFoundry from Pivotal, and the Google App Engine whereas for PaaS on private cloud include hosted CloudFoundry. Cloud platform vendors usually offer automation and management tools to consolidate and integrate applications directly into their cloud platforms. As a result, IT organisations get better automation features in the same turnkey cloud platform. This has made PaaS essential for those organisations who approached DevOps and want to automate, test, and develop services.”

Key DevOps players

The report recognises firms such as CA Technologies, IBM Corp., Puppet Inc., Rackspace Inc., and Red Hat Inc., as key players in the global DevOps platform market.
Other prominent vendors in the market are: CFEngine, Chef, Cisco, Clarive, CollabNet, DBmaestro, Dell, Docker, HP, Inedo, Infosys, Microsoft, SaltStack, VersionOne, and VMware.
