Google’s decision to shift its competitive cloud strategy from cost to product value appears to be a wakeup call for Microsoft and Amazon.

In 2016, Microsoft, Amazon and Google all cut prices of some of their cloud products in a bid to win over more customers.

Since then, Google has taken the cloud space by storm, focussing mainly on product value instead of cost.

Last year, Snapchat’s parent Snap was spending double the amount on Google’s cloud instead of Amazon’s cloud.

Spotify also recently revealed that it will be spending US$450million on Google’s Cloud over the next three years, despite previously being a “prominent Amazon cloud customer”.

With the hope of driving usage of their cloud products among existing customers, Microsoft and Amazon are now rolling out more cloud products to appeal to customers in a variety of industries, as well as investing in customer education.

Over the next three years, Spotify announced its willingness to spend half a billion dollars on Google’s Public Cloud services.

Earlier this year, Spotify signed a contract saying it is to spend a minimum of US$447million on Google’s Cloud Platform in its first three years of service.

The music, podcast, and video streaming service also revealed last month that it’s to move all of its data to Google Cloud.

Cloud revenue

Similarly, last year, Snap said it would spend US$2billion over five years on Google’s Public Cloud services, or around US$400million per year.

Despite this, Spotify said it will pay Google up to US$149million per year, or US$37.25million per quarter – 3.7% of Google’s quarterly cloud revenue figure.

Before adopting Google Cloud, Spotify used Amazon Web Services.

According to Sir Martin Sorrell, the CEO and Founder of Wire and Plastic Products (WPP), jobs will be destroyed by the growth of technology.

Experts have long been discussing conflicting thoughts on how future work forces will cope with the rise of artificial intelligence and automation.

“I happen to be in the camp of people who think that technology disrupts and will destroy jobs,” announced Sorrell at the London Tech Week event. “It’s shortening the supply chain and getting rid of what I used to call the tyranny of geography.”

‘Tech giants control the world’s global trillion dollar market’

Gig economy startups such as Uber have been a main concern because of it being ‘bad for workers,’ as well as tech giants such as Google and Facebook, because of them controlling 20% of the world’s global trillion dollar market and 75% of digital advertising.

“Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook are the most valuable brands in the world. They are a frenemy to sovereign states and very powerful organisations,” said Sorrell. “I would like to see Snap succeed and become the third force in online media and advertising along with Google and Facebook.”

Sorrell also noted that the supply chain in advertising and the media is the most complicated he’s ever seen, although it should simplify over time.
