It was recently announced that the US will be collaborating with the European Union (EU) in order to align their technology policing despite challenges over data privacy policies.

Indeed, the United States-European Trade and Technology Council (TCC), which was launched in June, aims to lead international digital transformation through cooperation on technology and regulatory policies, digital issues, and supply chains. It is also developing technology standards and support collaborative research.

However, there are some concerns over every country’s approaches to data privacy and regulation, and its views on relationships with China. The many differences between the US and the EU on trade fronts and regulatory policy can indeed become problematic. It is then difficult to coordinate and make progress across all areas, which include emerging technology, clean technology, supply chains, data governance, and technology platforms.

It was reported that the TTC should prioritize the Privacy Shield Frameworks and issues related to data protection to lead collaboration. The Privacy Shield Frameworks offers a mechanism for companies to follow data protection requirements when moving personal data from the EU to the US.  However, in 2020, it has been invalidated by the Court of Justice of the European Union on the grounds that it didn’t comply with the level of data protection required by the EU.
In order for countries to cooperate on developing technology policies and standards, it is then essential to solve the privacy shield issue first.

By unleashing a new cloud computing strategy, the European Commission believes it will deliver a net gain of 2.5 million new jobs in the economy, as well as an annual boost of EU€160billion by 2020.

The EU Commission’s plan is to provide support for EU-wide certification schemes for trustworthy cloud providers; develop model ‘safe and fair’ contract terms for cloud computing contracts including Service Level Agreements and improve the technical standards of cloud users.

Viviane Reding, Vice-President, European Commission, said in a blog post: “Europe needs to think big. The cloud strategy will enhance trust in innovative computing solutions and boost a competitive digital single market where Europeans feel safe.

“That means a swift adoption of the new data protection framework which the Commission proposed earlier this year and the development of safe and fair contract terms and conditions.”

To shape up the European market, and the boost the chances of European cloud providers growing, the EU has also partnered with Member States.

Tech firms have six hours to release criminal data https://devopsnews.online/tech-firms-have-six-hours-to-release-criminal-data/ Thu, 19 Apr 2018 13:45:48 +0000 http://www.devopsonline.co.uk/?p=12469 The European Commission proposes a six hour investigation against "terrorists and criminals" through the cloud, operators of messaging apps, and email service providers

The European Commission has proposed a six hour investigation against “terrorist and criminal” data through the cloud, operators of messaging apps, and email service providers.

The six hour deadline will be imposed by technology firms if the case is an “emergency”, and a ten-day deadline has been offered for less urgent investigations.

According to the European Commision, this proposal has come to light because access to one particular email stored on a Microsoft server in Ireland took more than a year, by which time the data can be deleted.

The EU also wants a “European Preservation Order” to prevent service providers deleting data – this package of measures calls for any service providers that operate within the EU.

Egenera announces compliance to cloud data protection https://devopsnews.online/egenera-announces-compliance-cloud-data-protection/ Thu, 08 Feb 2018 12:49:31 +0000 http://www.devopsonline.co.uk/?p=11810 Egenera announces its Xterity Cloud Services is fully compliant with the Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers Europe (CISPE) code of conduct for data protection, as well as joining CISPE as a member company

Egenera today announced its Xterity Cloud Services is fully compliant with the Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers Europe (CISPE) code of conduct for data protection, as well as joining CISPE as a member company.

The leading provider of wholesale cloud services are sold through the channel and deliver a full range of dedicated, managed, private and public cloud services.

The CISPE Code of Conduct provides a framework for data protection that makes it easier for businesses to assess if a cloud service provider’s infrastructure services provide proper safeguards for them to perform processing on personal data while meeting the compliance obligations found in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which takes effect on May 25, 2018.

The CISPE code of conduct:

  • An effective, easily accessed framework for complying with the EU’s GDPR
  • Excludes the re-use of customer data
  • Enables data storage and processing exclusively within the EU
  • Identifies cloud infrastructure services suitable for different types of data processing
  • Helps citizens to retain control of their personal and sensitive data

Till Brennan, vice president at Egenera, said: “With cloud instances located around the world, we strive to stay ahead of regulatory requirements so that our partners and their customers don’t have to worry about whether the infrastructure they rely on is compliant.

“With respect to CISPE, while data governance in the cloud is a shared responsibility, our partners and their customers have peace-of-mind knowing that we’re performing our role in a CISPE compliant manner. One critical point that some businesses may not be aware of is that the GDPR also addresses the export of personal data outside the EU.”

Xterity Cloud Services also include Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS), Backup as a Service (BaaS), and cloud migration.

To make Europe the future mobile network global leader, the European Union (EU) has established a common baseline for 5G standards

In a bid for the EU to become the future mobile networking technology, the republic of San Marino has announced its plans, allowing 30,000 residents to enjoy more reliable internet through 5G by the beginning of next year.

Telecom Italia Mobile has agreed to support San Marino’s government ideas by combining collective resources on potential 5G mobile networks across the EU, and signing a ministerial declaration to join member states.

‘Using 5G networks to communicate in the future’

Urve Palo, Estonian Minister for entrepreneurship and IT said to a Computer Weekly: “Everybody and everything will be using 5G networks to communicate in the future, and I am very glad that we managed to sign the declaration.

“This indicates that all member states are thinking about the future and are willing to boost connectivity and Europe’s digital competitiveness to the next level. 5G will allow faster internet connections across Europe and make it possible to develop new technologies, such as connected cars, innovative industrial machines and e-health initiatives.”

The declaration was also signed by Norway and the UK.

The UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) has warned future elections could be under peril and seriously impacted by Russian state-sponsored cyber attacks, leaving citizens under immense risk.

Earlier this month at a European council meeting in Brussels, British Prime Minister, Theresa May stated “in light of the alleged Montenegro coup plot, I will call for us to do more to counter destabilising Russian disinformation campaigns and raise the visibility of the Western commitment to this region.”

The Prime Minister also said the UK would “enhance [its] security co-operation with our Western Balkans partners, including on serious and organised crime, anti-corruption and cyber security.”

As reported by GCHQ, the primary concerns are that hackers could leak internal emails or data from the GCHQ, however, they are fighting to keep all information strictly confidential. These warnings have become more evident, as it seems votes were tampered in during the most recent US presidential election whereby Donald Trump became America’s 45th president.

Before the former President Barack Obama left office he requested a full review into the Russian hacking scandals across the US, as well as exiling some natives back to their home country.

Hacking the US election

Although, it seems May and Trump are supposedly working together to solve the issue, the hackers are being accused of helping Trump win the US presidential election due to the great extent of votes in his favour. The election was back on November 8th 2016.

Sir Michael Fallon, British conservative politician, has said “Nato must defend itself as effectively in the cyber sphere as it does in the air, on land, and at sea”. Currently, US intelligence has come to the conclusion that Russia took action towards Democrats in the 2016 election, under the influence that Trump would receive more votes. Russia has denied all cases in relation with the US election.
