Tech firms have six hours to release criminal data

The European Commission has proposed a six hour investigation against “terrorist and criminal” data through the cloud, operators of messaging apps, and email service providers.

The six hour deadline will be imposed by technology firms if the case is an “emergency”, and a ten-day deadline has been offered for less urgent investigations.

According to the European Commision, this proposal has come to light because access to one particular email stored on a Microsoft server in Ireland took more than a year, by which time the data can be deleted.

The EU also wants a “European Preservation Order” to prevent service providers deleting data – this package of measures calls for any service providers that operate within the EU.
