GDPR is a ‘potential minefield for the BBC’, says Test Manager https://devopsnews.online/bbcs-gdpr-minefield-says-test-manager/ Tue, 13 Mar 2018 10:40:11 +0000 http://www.devopsonline.co.uk/?p=12068 Test Manager at the BBC, Bill Watson, reveals how the public service broadcaster ensures project workflows are reviewed and GDPR compliant for the May deadline

Test Manager at the BBC, Bill Watson, reveals how the BBC ensures project workflows are reviewed and GDPR compliant for the May deadline

Watson works as the test manager in the BBC End User Compute (EUC) department. As the BBC outsources its IT infrastructure spend, his team acts as the gatekeeper for incoming work.

Watson said: “In EUC we’re more consumers of these services. To help in this we have top-notch architects and a technologist team to ensure we’re ahead of the curve.

“For us testers at the BBC, it’s all about working with our suppliers, from the inception to the delivery of projects. We collaborate closely on our projects, often hosting the development teams.

“This means we can react quickly when we uncover issues, whilst also allowing easy contact with our end users to tailor what we’re delivering to them.”

Watson is currently working across two projects that are changing the identity management system. The identity management system controls access to internal BBC systems and also manages how Joiners Movers and Leavers are processed. This means it interfaces with “pretty much everything” within the BBC system so the architecture is potentially quite complex.

‘Modern ways of working’

“This is where large organisation syndrome can kick in… they’re not necessarily the timeliest change management processes, but they allow us to get the job done,” he added.

One of the pressing topics at the moment is the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May.

Given the financial penalty is 2% of the worldwide turnover, the BBC could be liable to a potential penalty of around £100million for transgressions, so the corporation has to be extremely focused on the GDPR.

Watson continued: “For the BBC, GDPR is a potential minefield.

“There’s been an education programme rolled out across the whole of the corporation, but, at the end of the day, it’s down to individuals to think about how GDPR will affect the data they collect, and with modern ways of working information can be collected by more people than you might think.

£100 million financial penalty

“It’s not just apps, its things like lists of contestants on quiz show where details might be collated on spreadsheets or, more likely, bespoke SharePoint apps.

“From the perspective of my team, we’ve obviously been aware of the changes and have factored that into our work accordingly.

“For example, I’ve been programme test managing across a pan-broadcaster project that collects a lot of highly sensitive personal data on the diversity of those working within the broadcasting industry such as gender, ethnic origin and sexuality.”

For this project, the BBC also ensured that all broadcasters on the project consulted in-house legal teams. Their output was then factored into our requirements and it was down to the testers to ensure that all standards were rigorously tested.

“This project has already been mentioned in parliament so getting GDPR right is vital,” added Watson.

A new app that allows “not just the rich and famous” to hire a personal bodyguard is set to be launched in northeast China.

The app called Jinyiqei is set to launch this September in Qingdao, providing an “Uber-like” service, connecting companies and individuals citywide with more than 50,000 staff from 47 security companies.

The app is similar to taxi applications, with app users being able to see the availability of bodyguards across the city in real-time.

According to Qingdao News, it provides bodyguards for anyone who feels unsafe, particularly those concerned about transporting valuables.

One of the app’s developers, Li Shangshang, told the BBC: “The bodyguards are former military personnel, and have been required to present their ID cards and military discharge certificates of permits in order to qualify for the app.

“They have also been required to take manners and etiquette training classes, and must wear a uniform at work.”

The price range of a bodyguard is expected to be between 70 and 200 yuan an hour.

More than US$140,000 worth of bitcoins have been removed from online wallets, previously paid by WannaCry victims.

The victims were ordered to pay US$300 – US$600 in bitcoins to get their systems back, and the ransomware infected and encrypted multiple computers on corporate networks.

The “vast majority” of bitcoins were withdrawn last Thursday, according to the BBC, leaving security experts “confused”.

The bitcoins are now thought to be in a “mixer”, making it harder to track where the currency ends up.

Senior manager at F-Secure, Andy Patel, said in a recent statement to the BBC: “I have no idea why they would move that money, to be honest.

“I wouldn’t imagine that they are going to try and turn those bitcoins into real money. If they do, it’s going to give someone a way to track them to an actual person.”

Ilia Kolochenko, CEO of web security company, High-Tech Bridge, added: “Professional cybercriminals have well-established contacts with organised crime, financial institutions and even law enforcement agencies.

“It’s a not a big problem to find a virtually untraceable way for bitcoin laundering. A lot of amateur cyber criminals were traced by various mistakes when they were trying to ‘cash out’, but professionals have different ways to stay in the shadows.”

Patel also noted that funds could be used to pay for dark web services.

OneWeb satellite and European aerospace giant Airbus have started producing a satellite constellation, hoping to deliver broadband links from orbit worldwide.

The network will accommodate at least 600 spacecrafts, which could encompass more than 2,000 in the future.

The projects main aim is for every school to have a connection, and to build a large constellation, which will require change in manufacturing satellites.

OneWeb will be focusing on high volume and low cost, although according to the BBC, it can take Europe’s biggest space company hundreds of millions of dollars and many months to build the specialist platform.

Despite this, there is concern that a proliferation of multi-satellite networks could lead to a cascade and collisions and a lot of junk.

“Here, we’ve had to go other ways, to be really commercial and calculating according to the target cost because that is very decisive in the whole business case for OneWeb,” said the Boss of Airbus, Tom Enders.

“The most obvious difference you notice between these new lines and the conventional satellite cleanroom is the trolley robot, which moves the developing satellites between the various work stations. But the ‘revolution’ here goes far beyond automation; it requires a whole chain of suppliers and their components to scale their work to a different game plan,” he added.

The first 10 satellites to come off the Toulouse assembly line have a deadline to launch in April next year.

To help the United Nations (UN) store digital legal identification for refugees who have no licensed documents, technology companies Accenture and Microsoft have created a digital ID, which runs on blockchain.

Citizens will be able to access personal details from any location because the prototype shows commercial and public records, which is essential for a range of financial, health and education services.

Accenture is building an existing biometrics identity management platform on the system soon, which will be tested with aid agencies.

According to the BBC, 1.1 billion people worldwide have no valid documentation, including people who have been displaced from their original homes.

‘Unique identifier stamp’

The blockchain ID will create a unique identifier ‘stamp’, between the refugee and server data, to confirm confirmation for every service received.

“For someone who has nothing, who is starting over, this is a means by which they can start over and not lose their identity again. It’s a much richer set of identity information than we have today,” said Accenture’s Managing Director, David Treat.

“We all have challenges with identity because it is fragmented and it is owned by the authorities and not by us. If you count the number of logins you have, there are a lot, and you don’t own a lot of your information, someone else does. This is the basis by which identity can be stolen or corrupted,” he added.

The UN’s ideology is for everyone to have legal digital identities by 2030.

Cyber thieves have coordinated attacks on Britney Spears’ Instagram account by commenting on her images.

Russian hackers called Turla posted comments that looked like spam but was code in virus on the singer’s picture gallery which controlled malware, directing victims to other sites, according to security firm Eset.

To spread the malware and track victims, several other websites were also attacked with this malicious code that has been active since 2014, desired to catch government workers, officials and diplomats, according to Eset Researcher, Jean-Ian Boutin.

“Using social media in this way made life harder for defenders,” said Boutin. “Firstly, it is difficult to distinguish malicious traffic to social media from legitimate traffic; secondly, it gives the attackers more flexibility when it comes to changing the C&C address as well as erasing all traces of it,” he added.

According to the BBC, by commenting on Britney’s Instagram pictures, Turla’s creators were refining or testing the control system.

A malware called Judy has been downloaded up to 18 million times, mainly through Google’s Play Store games apps, according to Check Point researchers.

The apps silently register the device to a remote server once downloaded, which sends back malicious ad-click software to generate revenue for the site by clicking on adverts and opening hidden websites.

The malicious code has been found in more than 40 apps from the game Enistudio, created by South Korean developer Kiniwini, as well as several other app developers.

“I do not know how long the malicious versions of the apps have been available, but all the Judy games have been updated since March this year,” said Check Point.

“There are many tools available, and the advantage is that the malware distributor can change them remotely, which makes it difficult for anti-malware software to keep up,” added Andrew Smith, a Senior Lecturer in Networking at the Open University.

The infected apps have now been removed from Google Play Store.
