The amount of IoT devices in India is expected to soar from 200 million units in 2016 to 2.7 billion units by 2020 — making India a leader in the IoT market.

More companies around the world are connecting via IoT — a sector worth hundreds of billions of dollars. This is because of its transformational potential as businesses have the opportunity to manage devices better, as well as the ability to analyse data and automate workflows.

According to a NASSCOM report, the IoT market in India is expected to reach US$15billion by 2020, which would account for 5% of the industry worldwide.

India’s IoT growth has led to the likes of Amazon, Samsung and Ericsson moving projects to the country over the last week.

Amazon hopes to give Indian citizens access to Alexa via hundreds of third-party devices; Samsung is strengthening its voice assistant offering Bixby by working to bring the solution to more devices; and Ericsson is driving talks with Indian telecom operators to launch IoT services, after launching an IoT marketplace.

Ericsson is also a part of a smart city project in India with some of its IoT solutions, such as Connected Aquaponics and Smart Watergrid Management, currently under control in the country.

Samsung announced that, by 6 February 2018, it will stop supporting backups and third-party apps on its cloud storage service Samsung Cloud.

The technology company revealed the change of policy in an email to Samsung Cloud users, as it is to immediately delete any third-party app backups on the day.

The Samsung email said: “After this change, you will not be able to back up app data or restore previously backed up app data in Samsung Cloud. Customers who need to back up app data should do so using the backup and restore features provided by the application itself.

“Please note that you can continue to use the Secure Folder backup and restore service even after the change to the Samsung Cloud service policy, and it only affects app data backup and restore.

“After this change, we will promptly destroy your personal information that was collected for the purpose of delivering the service.

“However, if there is the obligation to retain information in accordance with the provisions of the relevant statutes, the information shall be retained, and immediately destroyed after the expiration of the retention period prescribed by current and applicable regulations.”

Samsung Cloud will still be offering its 15GBs of free storage, where you can upload personal files and documents.

Users looking for an alternative to use third-party apps may want to consider switching to Samsung Smart Switch Mobile app.

Samsung Electronics intends to sell and recycle its Galaxy Note 7 mobile phone in South Korea despite battery issues and in an attempt to reduce waste.

Although the Galaxy Note 7 cost US$850 starting price, it will go on sale in South Korea this Friday for US$611.

The phones batteries are prone to overheat and catch fire; even though the phone was replaced with a new batch, the battery issues were not solved.

The company blames two battery makers after investigation, finding flaws in production and design.

According to the Daily Mail, overseas sales plants will be determined later, and the supply will be limited to 400,000 units.

Samsung said in a statement on there website: “Samsung is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously. In response to recently reported cases of the new Galaxy Note 7, we conducted a thorough investigation and found a battery cell issue.”

“However, because our customers’ safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have stopped sales of the Galaxy Note7. For customers who already have Galaxy Note7 devices, we will voluntarily replace the current device with a new one over the coming weeks. For more information customers need to contact the customer service team on 0330 7261000.”

Samsung are creating a new Samsung Note Fan Edition (FE), a refurbished version of its Galaxy Note 7. “The new Note FE is part of its effort to minimise waste,” noted Samsung.

In preparation for the ‘fourth industrial revolution’, Samsung SDI will boost technological developments for next-generation materials, according to Samsung’s CEO, Jun Young-Hyun.

Hgun previously emphasised technology developments that will “lead” the global battery market at the company’s 47th anniversary ceremony.

According to the Korea Herald, Samsung’s battery supplier is trying to make a positive turnaround this year, after losing US$831 million last year because of the Galaxy Note 7 explosion fallout and slow market demand.

Hyun announced four major tasks at the recent ceremony, in hope for a positive turnaround building a product platform, securing safety, next-generation material development and seeking innovation in its manufacturing systems: “We will enhance our technologies that will be second to none,” he added.

The Linux Foundation has received a new Platinum Member: Microsoft Corp.

Amongst the product announcements at its annual Connect(); developer event, Microsoft Cloud and Enterprise Executive Vice President Scott Guthrie detailed how Microsoft has joined the Linux Foundation as a Platinum Member to better collaborate with the open source community, as well as welcoming Google to the independent .NET Foundation.

The software giant will also be working with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. to enable .NET developers to build apps for more than 50 million Samsung devices worldwide.

“We want to help developers achieve more and capitalize on the industry’s shift toward cloud-first and mobile-first experiences using the tools and platforms of their choice,” Guthrie said. “By collaborating with the community to provide open, flexible and intelligent tools and cloud services, we’re helping every developer deliver unprecedented levels of innovation.”

Collaborating with the open source community

As part of its effort to work more closely with the open source community, Microsoft announced it has joined the Linux Foundation as a Platinum Member. Microsoft’s membership in the Linux Foundation will benefit customers through increased collaboration and innovation among a diverse ecosystem.

“By becoming a Linux Foundation Platinum member, Microsoft is better able to collaborate with the open source community to deliver transformative mobile and cloud experiences to more people,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of The Linux Foundation. “Microsoft has been a key contributor to many projects, and we see the company intensifying its involvement and commitment to open development.”

Microsoft has become an active member of the open source community in part through the popularity of its open source and cross-platform application framework .NET Core. Wednesday’s addition of Google to the .NET Foundation’s Technical Steering Group further reinforces the vibrancy of the .NET developer community as well as Google’s commitment to fostering an open platform that supports businesses and developers who have standardized on .NET.

Other industry leaders are also betting on .NET Core for their own commercial products. On Wednesday Samsung is releasing a preview of its Visual Studio Tools for Tizen. Developers can use the tools to build .NET apps for the Tizen operating system that runs on millions of Samsung TVs, wearables, mobile devices and many IoT devices around the world.
