A new research paper written by academics in the US and Canada showed that OpenAI’s GPT-3 language-generating model has a serious discrimination-bias against Muslims, more than any other religious group.

Since the AI-model was trained with human-made text from the internet, the data had Western origins and biases. Indeed, it was founded out that the word ‘Muslim’ is associated with ‘terrorist’ in 23% of test cases, while ‘Jewish’ is associated with ‘money’ in 5% of test cases.

The company then built a system to filter out this kind of language, which shouldn’t alter GPT-3’s algorithm. However, this implies that the biases can’t be removed in the model itself and will remain part of it.

A robot journalism project where computes write 30,000 stories a month for local media is going to be funded by Google.

The scheme that will be launched in 2018 will use human journalists with the Press Association (PA) News Agency, and will be funded £622,000 for the project, according to the BBC.

To automate reports about crime, health and employment, five people will use official open data sources.

The PA announced that Reporters and Data and Robots (Radar) would benefit “established media outlets”, independent publishers and local bloggers.

‘Cost effective ways to produce local stories’

“Skilled human journalists will still be vital in the process, but Radar allows us to harness artificial intelligence to scale up to a volume of local stories that would be impossible to provide manually,” said PA Editor, Pete Clifton.

University of London and the University of Munich’s Neil Thurman argued: “You can’t really cover local government through automation because it’s a lot about investigation, politics, personal relationships, who has said what to whom and so forth—it’s difficult to get that information in data feed form.”

Thurman also noted that he finds it difficult to see how automation is going to help provide additional coverage of local magistrates courts and crown courts.

According to Computer Weekly, young people are worried that robots will have better skills than them when leaving education.

The arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to fewer job, said 76% of young people who are worried that robots skills will stand out more because of lack of work experience at a young age.

Supporting young people, the Young Enterprise Charity and Financial Education polled 200 young business-minded individuals for its report ‘Robot revolution: The impact of artificial intelligence on entrepreneurs and job prospects.’

Robots forcing students to learn new skills

The report findings found that 59% of participants are worried about not finding a job that a robot could do; with 33% believing that robots with problem solving and team working skills will force students to learn new skills before leaving education.

“The rise of the robots will have a devastating impact on job prospects for young people who have not been equipped with basic work skills,” said Michael Mercieca, CEO at Young Enterprise.

“Its time to wake up and recognise education must extend beyond academia and properly prepare the next generation for the world of work with skills like communication, teamwork and creativity,” he added.

Another survey that differently consisted of 111,362 participants and was created by www.gov.uk similarly showed that more than 10% of workers believe that 20% of daily tasks could be taken over by robots.
