It was recently reported that the US Supreme Court would be allowing LinkedIn to stop rival recruitment data companies from taking personal data from its platform.

Indeed, LinkedIn has previously pointed out that rival companies have been stealing customer data from their public-facing user profiles. It then tried to use the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act to prevent it from happening again but without much success.

However, the Court now declared that it would be reconsidering the case as it was discovered that a person cannot violate the specific law if they are using a computer they have permission to access. The result of the case might limit the use of data scraping on public-facing websites in the US.

Privacy management technology usage is on the rise https://devopsnews.online/privacy-management-technology-usage-is-on-the-rise/ Wed, 01 Aug 2018 14:02:03 +0000 http://www.devopsonline.co.uk/?p=13648 IAPP and TrustArc address data privacy and protection challenges among businesses and what privacy management tech is on the rise

IAPP and TrustArc address data privacy and protection challenges, both companies found that privacy management technology usage is on the rise across all regions and that privacy teams have a significant influence on purchasing decisions for eight of the ten technology categories surveyed.

“This global survey is critical in our efforts to better understand how privacy professionals are addressing compliance challenges and the technologies that are being deployed now and in the near future,” said Chris Babel, CEO of TrustArc.

Addressing privacy challenges

“Though security budgets remain larger, we’re seeing a marked shift in privacy teams’ influence over technology purchasing decisions. This trend confirms what we’re seeing among our customers – that they have a growing need for technology solutions to help them manage privacy compliance at scale on a global basis.”

The key survey finding was that EU GDPR and other global and domestic legal reforms, combined with technological advancements, have made the task of operationalising privacy and data protection vastly more complicated.

This is no wonder, as businesses now must account for how data is entering the organisation, how it is being used, what permissions are attached to it and who has the responsibility for managing it. To address these challenges, the demand for privacy technology has increasingly grown.

Privacy software

According to 24% of survey respondents, data mapping and flow technologies are most useful for securing data while 21% of respondents, differently, prefer using personal data discovery tools.

In regards to privacy programme assessment and management software, 33% of organisations also said they had purchased or implemented it, while 32% of respondents said they are planning to purchase this technology in the future.

To conduct the survey, TrustArc and the IAPP surveyed more than 300 privacy professionals in the US, EU, UK and Canada.

Apple removes iOS apps over GDPR https://devopsnews.online/apple-removes-ios-apps-over-gdpr/ Mon, 21 May 2018 16:26:14 +0000 http://www.devopsonline.co.uk/?p=12852 Starting just two weeks before the upcoming GDPR, Apple has been removing iOS apps that don't comply with its location privacy standards

Starting just two weeks before the upcoming GDPR, Apple has been removing iOS apps that don’t comply with its location privacy standards.

To remove the iOS apps, Apple has sent emails to the developers whose apps don’t comply with the new regulations.

Despite this, it’s not clear whether Apple is moving in response to the new rules or merely tackling a new category of undesirable apps, according to Developer.

App developers must do more than ask permission to take location data in order to stay compliant with the new rules, as well as need to know where the data is being held.

Privacy Impact Assessments

Developers who aren’t compliant with Apple’s guidelines must remove any code or framework that contravenes the directives, then resubmit their app to the App Store to ensure that users trust the App Store and its listed apps.

Apple wrote in its blog post: “As part of our EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) work, we are undertaking Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA) of our major products and services and integrating PIAs as we develop new products and services.

“We also fully assess all acquisitions. These PIAs take into consideration how laws affect privacy and assess any associated privacy risks.

‘Providing you with support’

“Apple also regularly engages with a wide range of civil society representatives globally on various privacy issues including privacy by design and encryption.

“To make sure your personal information is secure, we strictly enforce privacy safeguards within the company. This means we use access management and access controls commensurate with the risk to data to ensure access to data is associated with a business need, such as providing you with support.”

The American multinational technology company has also removed more than a million apps, including ones that didn’t support modern 64-bit versions of iOS.
