Nearly two-thirds of companies see hybrid cloud or private cloud as the infrastructure for the future of their firm, research has revealed. Furthermore, around three-quarters of developers put scalability, speed, cost and ease of use at the top of their list when choosing an IaaS hosting solution.

Leaseweb USA, a hosting and cloud services establishment, discovered the results in its “Developer IaaS Insights Study,” based on an examination conducted at DeveloperWeek Austin.

Understanding migration

“As companies evolve, their hosting needs and capabilities also evolve,” said Lex Boost, CEO of Leaseweb USA. “Understanding why companies choose to migrate to an IaaS solutions vendor provides insight to not only the marketplace, but what value vendors can bring to the businesses.”

The CEO added that the report reflects on business developments: “This survey is a microcosmic example of the current industry trend. The power, speed, flexibility and functionality of dedicated, hybrid and private cloud infrastructure environments are undeniable. Companies are shifting back to custom solutions designed to fit their exact needs, in this precise moment of their company lifecycle. The mettle of metal cannot be ignored.”

Other findings include:

  • 51.7% plan on migrating in the next two years while 26.7% have not yet decided on this point.
  • Less than 20% of respondents believe they are using the industry standard and have no plans to change their infrastructure.
  • 37.5% of companies noted migration costs to the top barrier while 24.2% of respondents identified cost alone as the top barrier
  • 15% aren’t sure what to outsource, whilst 8.3% say they are not finding the right partner
  • 3.3% is held ransom by public cloud providers

These results show that developers looking for the right cloud fit need to consider both time scales and cost to avoid unnecessary barriers.

Adopt DevOps & Kubernetes to stay competitive! https://devopsnews.online/adopt-devops-kubernetes-to-stay-competitive/ Mon, 02 Jul 2018 08:54:08 +0000 http://www.devopsonline.co.uk/?p=13129 Adopting DevOps helps enterprises expand their digital experiences and brings down costs. Here are some of the key reasons to adopt DevOps, if you haven't already!

Throughout the years’, the adoption of DevOps has increased in a number of different sectors and has come a long way in order for companies to stay ahead of the game quickly and efficiently.

As we all know, in regards to faster time-to-market, there is no room for errors as it can, potentially, lower business value and ruin brands. Because of this, enterprises are encouraging testing and development teams to use contemporary methodologies, frameworks and tools such as Kubernetes to increase the deployment of applications and software.

This is where DevOps comes in useful, bringing development and IT operations together to enhance collaboration between an array of functions.

Andrew Hardie, Chairman of the BCS DevSecOps Expert Group, commented: “DevOps is about speed. Speed through automation, reliability and consistency. Automation deals with commit, build, package, test, promote and deploy, with multiple levels of test and deploy for each environment (dev, sit, nft, pre-prod, prod).”

Speed, quality & innovation

Here are some of the key reasons to adopt DevOps, if you haven’t already!

  • Continuous testing, continuous integration and continuous deployment is a part of the DevOps methodology, enabling shorter development cycles, accelerating deployment frequencies, and making the software release process more dependable
  • DevOps ensures that the quality of the software release is maintained, supporting enterprises to meet their set business objectives regularly
  • It works towards facilitating teams with continuous feedback and improvement even in production, enabling automated release testing, continuous integration testing and continuous planning
  • DevOps supports automated tests for front-end, middle tier and backend validations, meaning quality check-gates are created and maintained at every stage of the software testing cycle
  • Agile and flexibility in development processes ensures speed, quality and innovation.

DevOps & Kubernetes

DevOps teams are committed to open source tools such as Kubernetes, as most DevOps engineers adopt it in place of closed-source alternatives.

Hardie agreed: “When implementing DevOps, you should also add monitoring, event logging, metrics and tracing, as well as GitOps for declarative environment promotion. Kubernetes is also evolving very fast.

“Keeping up is a struggle, both for vendors and DevOps professionals. A new ecosystem tool appears every week, or sooner. Deployment is no longer procedural but declarative. Build and package tools (e.g. Maven, Docker) disappear behind the curtain of automation.”

More and more firms appear to be turning to Kubernetes and microservices platforms to add more agility and, in many cases, computing power to their IT operations, while serverless deployments mainly seen as a way to save resources by relegating server management to third-parties.

“For the developer, everything between code commit and code deploy becomes automated and invisible. They see only test failure report or successful deployment. The DevOps team are the ones doing all the hard work to make that happen, keep it happening, keep it up-to-date and keep it secure,” Hardie added.

Hardie has been “online” since 1982 and automating IT systems since 1991. In that time, he has worked for seven parliaments, eight UK Government departments, three Local Authorities, Tony Blair’s private office, the Royal Household, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, two of the “big five” UK banks, two hi-tech startups and three international NGOs. Andrew is a well-known figure on the London DevOps scene and a regular speaker at conferences and Meetups. He is also Chairman of the BCS DevSecOps Expert Group.

Scalr today announced the results of its 2018 Enterprise Cloud Management Landscape Survey, uncovering new insights about multi-cloud adoption, management and concerns related to cost, security, automation and self-service.

According to the survey, over 75% of enterprises are either currently using or evaluating a cloud management platform (CMP) to balance the complex needs of multiple enterprise groups and create secure, cost-effective cloud environments.

Despite this, 35% indicated they already have a CMP in place, with 40% of respondents saying they actively evaluate cloud management solutions, showing a clear acceleration of the cloud management market.

Security concerns

Security stood out as the main concern for enterprises adopting cloud, with 62% ranking it as the number one concern.

While 50% of enterprises ranked disaster recovery as the top reason for implementing multiple clouds.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) remains the most popular cloud platform, with 25.9% of enterprises using it compared to 23.9% for Microsoft Azure and 20.9% for VMware.

Hybrid cloud strategy

However, Microsoft Azure users are more likely than AWS and VMware users to leverage those platforms for both development and production environments. 88% of enterprise Azure users use it for both, followed by 73% for VMware and 72% for AWS.

Furthermore, 83% of respondents are focusing on a hybrid cloud strategy, composed of multiple private and public clouds.

Hybrid cloud is already deployed at 32% of enterprises, whereas another 17% are about to deploy and 27% are evaluating doing so.

Sebastian Stadil, founder and CEO of Scalr, commented: “It’s no secret that enterprises have turned to the cloud to innovate faster. We wanted to dive deeper to see how they’re using different cloud platforms and dealing with the complexities that come from multi-cloud environments.

Cost control

“As the Scalr survey indicates, as more businesses use a variety of cloud platforms in enterprise-wide environments, challenges that were able to be addressed during the initial wave of niche cloud deployments, like security, are again top concerns in this emerging ‘Cloud 2.0’ world.

“The vast majority of enterprises are looking to cloud management platforms to provide the flexibility needed for innovation along with the policies needed for security and cost control.”

The survey queried more than 500 IT leaders at large enterprises.

Survey participants in recent Tech Pro research said that they would rather have a hybrid cloud model because of the high cost of on-premises solutions.

According to a report in Tech Pros “sister site”, Tech Republic, companies are “increasingly embracing” hybrid cloud as a strategy of its own, because of its deployment combining “reliability and stability” of a private cloud, along with “on-demand capabilities” of the public cloud.

The majority of Tech Pro’s survey participants said they were familiar with the hybrid cloud concept, 36% said their company currently has a hybrid cloud solution, 32% said their company is currently evaluating one, and 32% said their company is not considering it.

The 2017 survey results show “little difference” from its 2016 survey, with the top two reasons for choosing a hybrid cloud model staying the same: to avoid hardware costs and its “usefulness in disaster cost”.

Java programmer at Tech Pro, James Sander, said: “For industries with seasonal or variable workloads, assembling a private cloud to handle normal workloads while relying on public cloud providers to handle burst workloads can be a budget-friendly IT strategy.”

Respondents also noted that, when it comes to choosing a public cloud vendor, companies look for three factors: features and services, cost, and familiarity.
