A recent report from Puppet revealed that IT salaries continue to increase despite widespread economic slowdowns and cross-industry layoffs.

Indeed, many organizations have accelerated their digital transformation initiatives by three or four years during the pandemic, which led to higher salaries for IT and engineering practitioners and managers.

It was also found out that companies that have already reached a higher level of DevOps evolution compensate their employees at a higher rate than those whose DevOps evolution is less advanced. 80% of employees working in organizations with developed DevOps practices earn at least $75,000 per year while only 57% of employees at companies with less evolved DevOps practices earn that much.

The pandemic led to a need for digital transformation and highly skilled people. As a result, these skills are getting compensated more.

Moreover, platform engineers have become the best-paid job title, with earnings higher than $150,000 per year, and respondents working in life sciences, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare (LSPH) were the top earners worldwide, with 64% of LSPH respondents earn more than $100,000.

However, it was also noticed that more women earn mid-range salaries than men, but men still earn more of the top salaries than women.

Puppet’s Fifth Annual DevOps Salary Report has become available recently, providing information about salaries in the software development job market.

According to the latest Puppet report, DevOps practitioners salaries have increased by 17% over the last 12 months.

Software vendor Puppet surveyed 3,000 DevOps experts and found out that DevOps salaries at the “practitioner level are closing in on the manager level”.

The reason for this increase is because organisations are beginning to realise the full benefits of hiring DevOps practitioners with a unique range of skills.

DevOps salaries

In its report, Puppet noted, that DevOps practitioner’s salaries in the UK had reached between $75,000 (£58,0000) and $100,000 (£78,000).

The highest salary increases were recorded in the U.S., followed by the UK.

“Companies are increasingly growing their DevOps practices and the way they deliver IT services and software across the globe, which means businesses are in desperate need of the right talent who can adapt to this shift, raise the bar with software delivery and play an integral role in innovation,” said Nick Smyth, VP Engineering at Puppet.

“DevOps requires a high level of desire to learn and improve, and this report shows that DevOps practitioners are getting their reward – and will continue to as we move into a new era of automation.”

The report also states that large enterprises with more complex IT infrastructure have higher paid position compared to smaller businesses.

Smaller companies are more forward thinking their IT automation and therefore require more, but lower skilled professionals to sustain IT activities.

The report also suggests that the retail industry appears to be the most lucrative sector for DevOps workers, with an increased focus on digital commerce and Omnichannel engagement.

Practitioners and managers

“This year’s report underscores that as more organisations prioritize DevOps, they are putting more resources into finding the best talent that can support their IT strategies and objectives,” commented Alanna Brown, director of product marketing at Puppet.

“To get ahead of the competition and stay relevant to clients, large organisations need sophisticated DevOps and automation technologies, so it comes as little surprise to see them paying more for highly-skilled practitioners and managers in order to sustain their complex technology infrastructure.”

This year, more than 4600 technology professionals from around the world took the fifth annual State of DevOps survey, presented by Puppet and DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA).

This year’s report shows again that DevOps practices such as continuous delivery and automated testing contribute to both IT team performance and an organisation’s overall productivity and performance.

DevOps salary data

In addition to DevOps practices and performance, Puppet also looked at salary data. This year’s survey also collected data on the number of servers and employees at respondents’ organisations.

Since most respondents are based in the United States, Europe, or Asia – approximately 50% in the United States alone – much of the salary analysis is focused on these regions.

Key findings from the report

  • IT practitioners earn more in the United States, Australia/New Zealand and Canada. The most common salary range in the United States is US$100,000 – US$125,000, and in the Australia/New Zealand region and Canada it’s US$75,000 – US$100,000.
  • Salaries for IT practitioners in the United States jumped up this year. The most common salary range moved from US$75,000-US$100,000 in 2015 to US$100,000-US$125,000 in 2016, and the percentage earning more than US$100,000 increased from 47% to 58%.
  • Sysadmins aren’t making as much as their practitioner peers. The most common salary range for sysadmins in the United States is US$75,000 – US$100,000 and 34% earn more than US$100,000, while the four other most common IT practitioner job titles are most likely to make US$100,000 – US$125,000 and over half earn more than US$100,000.
  • IT practitioners earn more at organisations with more servers. The most common salary range at organisations with more than 5,000 servers is US$100,000 – US$125,000, while it’s US$75,000 – US$100,000 at organisations with fewer than 5,000.
  • Manager salaries are almost off the chart. The percentage of DevOps managers in the US earning more than US$150,000 jumped from 26% in 2015 to 43% this year.

DevOps – IT practitioner salaries by gender

More than 99% of the 2016 survey’s practitioners reported their gender, up 1% from 2015’s initial gender survey. More than 94% of them identified as male, down from 95% in 2015, and a fraction of 1% selected “Other.”

Because of the small sample sizes beyond men (out of 2,808 practitioners globally and 1,358 in the United States, 156 and 101 identified as women), the survey cannot confidently compare salaries by gender in detail.

The data shows that 95% of practitioners in the United States – both male and female – made US$50,000 or more per year. There were no gender lines in the practitioner group’s jump from the US$75,000 – US$100,000 salary band to the US$100,000 – US$125,000 band.
