According to new research from Kaspersky Lab, 35% of UK consumers agreed they would be further up the career ladder if they had taken more risks in the workplace.

Despite this, taking a risk is still seen as a negative trait by 30% of Brits.

For 54% of respondents, there have been moments in their life where they wished they had taken a risk but didn’t; 45% also agreed that they don’t take enough risks in life.

Leon Ifayemi, co-founder of SPCE, commented: “I built up my experience and contact base and eventually took the ultimate risk – I quit my job to start my own company.

‘Risks to get ahead in the workplace’

“Not being cash rich, we couldn’t afford to pay for all the roles we required so my entire team of 20 decided to take a risk of their own, by agreeing to have their salaries subsidised with equity. This was a testament to the strength of our proposition and people’s commitment to our vision, despite the risks we faced.”

Despite 10% of UK adults saying they are prepared to take more risks online than in real life, face-to-face still prevails for those wanting to take a risk to get ahead in the workplace.

Over 39% felt that our society is too risk adverse and 30% think that taking risks is seen as a negative trait.

David Emm, principal security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, added: “The online world empowers people – giving them a confidence that they don’t have in the face-to-face world. 16% of the people we surveyed said they were more confident online than they would be in person.

‘Secure the moves you make online’

“People often say that it’s better to regret something you’ve done rather than something you haven’t. Taking risks is a good thing and people shouldn’t be afraid to take advantage of all the opportunities that are out there – and the role that the online world plays in making things happen.

“But whilst taking risks is good, this is not the same thing as being reckless and no one should let their guard down online – it’s vital to secure the moves you make online in the pursuit of success.”

The research was conducted in November 2017 by Arlington Research for Kaspersky Lab by 2,000 adults from the UK.

According to new research from Kaspersky Lab, 35% of businesses said they are unsure if certain pieces of corporate information are stored on company servers or cloud providers.

With cloud services enabling companies to take advantage of key technologies, it’s no surprise that 78% of businesses are already using at least one Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) based platform.

When it comes to IaaS, the report found that nearly 49% of enterprises and 45% of SMBs are looking to outsource IT infrastructure and processes to third parties.

‘Cloud services with no strategy’

The report also found, for many organisations, the speed of adoption and lure of cost and operational savings has been to the detriment of security, with many using cloud services with no strategy in place for the security of their information.

However, with 42% of businesses not feeling adequately protected from incidents affecting their cloud service provider and 24% of businesses experiencing a security incident affecting the IT infrastructure hosted by a third party over the last year – a reliance on cloud providers to provide complete protection could be a risky strategy.

‘Protecting cloud infrastructures’

Alessio Aceti, head of enterprise business at Kaspersky Lab, said: “Kaspersky Lab has proven experience in protecting cloud infrastructures. Our cyber security portfolio is ‘cloud-ready’ and is already supporting our existing customers in their transition from on-premise data centres to private and public clouds and hybrid infrastructures with multiple solutions and applications, all centrally managed.

“Today’s rapid pace of digital transformation is bringing more efficiency and flexibility to business operations, but it is also presenting new security challenges that put business agendas in danger.”

Designed to protect user data transmitted via the internet, Kaspersky Lab has introduced its new application, Kaspersky Secure Connection for Android.

For convenience and maximum user protection, the app’s critical feature is called adaptivity, which enables traffic encryption automatically, depending on the Wi-Fi networks level of security.

Kaspersky’s traffic encryption is created to secure sensitive photos sent online, private correspondence and secures passwords, which cyber criminals “may utilise as a trap”, because according to its research, 28% of global Wi-Fi networks are unsafe.

Kaspersky Secure Connection allows 200MB of free encrypted traffic per day, and My Kaspersky portal users will receive 300MB per day for free.

Andrei Mochola, head of consumer business at Kaspersky Lab, said: “Mobile devices are most often used to connect to unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks, which makes traffic encryption imperative.

“We are pleased to present a solution to protect data transmission on the most popular mobile operating system in the world. Now mobile users can be sure their financial operations and precious data are protected regardless of their location. We are planning to offer a similar solution for iOS devices by the end of the year.”

Kaspersky Secure Connection is not available to download and activate in the following regions because of legal restrictions: Belarus, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, China and Hong Kong.

New legislation which will comply with EU Data Protection Regulation will allow citizens to force social media and online companies to delete personal data.

The new law will give the Information Commissioner Office the rights to issue “tough fines” up to £17million, or 4% of global turnover for breaches of data law.

David Emm, principal security researcher, Kaspersky Lab, said: “The drafting of a new Data Protection Bill would grant unprecedented rights for consumers to force social media websites and online companies to delete their data and take back control of their personal information.”

Consumers will have the legal right to force social media companies and online traders to delete any unwanted content by the end of summer.

“In combination with the incoming General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) being implemented by the European Union, there will be widespread changes in the coming years to the way organisations collect, store and process data,” announced Emm.

Theresa May revealed plans to give people the right to request social media deletion during the Conservatives’ election campaign, and the Queen’s speech promised the legislation.

‘The public should embrace the new freedom’

“It is important that the general public embraces this new freedom and recognises the value of personal data – not just to ourselves but to would be cyber criminals,” said Emm.

“New data protection laws are designed to make organisations more careful with our data, but regardless of this, it is important that we, on an individual level, know what information is being kept and how it’s being handled – which will also reduce the likelihood of it falling into the wrong hands,” added Emm.

Emm also noted: “Being vigilant online – whether when using a work computer, home laptop, mobile or tablet device – should be second nature. Undertaking simple steps, like regularly changing passwords, reviewing default settings on social media and using anti-virus software across all devices can significantly help protect data.”

To protect the cloud and big data technology behind its private security network, Kaspersky Lab was awarded a patent, which gives instant threat detection required to keep data safe, according to the company.

With the cloud helping detect new threats, the network uses a continuous data exchange, including malicious programmes and websites that could pose a threat to a company’s security.

Kaspersky claimed that false positive rate detection is low because of platform process data being used by its users, insuring insights are accurate, and enabling businesses to act fast.

However, the company has developed a unique product that can be deployed on a private cloud, with a local copy of Kaspersky Security Network complying with data protection laws whilst serving businesses.

Anton Lapushkin, Head of Cloud Infrastructure Development at Kaspersky Lab, said: “Due to the role cloud computing and big data play in quick and accurate detection, services like Kaspersky Security Network are indispensable in cyber security.

“However, customers operating under strict regulations and data transfer policies are forced to disable cloud services like this, and therefore cut off a powerful protection layer.”

According to a new report called ‘Human Factor in IT Security: How Employees are Making Businesses Vulnerable’ by Kaspersky Lab and B2B International, employees hide IT security incidents in 40% of businesses globally and IT security incidents are caused by 46% of employees per year.

The findings show that careless or uninformed employees are most likely to cause a cyber security incident, whilst malware is continuously becoming more sophisticated.

Studies show that a careless accountant could easily open a malicious file disguised as an invoice, as 28% of attacks were targeted on businesses throughout last year through social engineering and phishing.

Cybercriminals often use employees as an entry point to get inside the corporate infrastructure. Phishing emails, weak passwords, fake calls from tech support — we’ve seen it all. Even an ordinary flash card dropped in the office parking lot or near the secretary’s desk could compromise the entire network — all you need is someone inside, who doesn’t know about, or pay attention to security, and that device could easily be connected to the network where it could reap havoc,” said David Emm, Principal Security Researcher at Kaspersky Lab.

It appears that staff would prefer to put its organisation at risk rather than report the problem, in case of embarrassment or punishment.

‘Careless employees cause 53% of incident’

The research shows that even where malware is concerned, careless employees cause 53% of incidents.

Slava Borilin, Security Education Programme Manager at Kaspersky Lab said: “The problem of hiding incidents should be communicated not only to employees, but also to top management and HR departments.”

Adding: “If employees are hiding incidents, there must be a reason why. In some cases, companies introduce strict, but unclear policies and put too much pressure on staff, warning them not to do this or that, or they will be held responsible if something goes wrong. Such policies foster fears, and leave employees with only one option — to avoid punishment whatever it takes. If your cyber security culture is positive, based on an educational approach instead of a restrictive one, from the top down, the results will be obvious.”

35% of businesses are hoping to improve security through delivering training to staff, and 43% want to deploy more sophisticated software.
