Adobe announced in February that it’s planning to end the life of Flash by 2020, due to open standards such as HTML5, WebGL and WebAssembly maturing; taking over the capabilities and functionalities that its plugins pioneer.

Despite Adobe’s deadline, it appears that less than 5% of worldwide websites are still using Flash, as most websites favour Javascript for running features instead.

A recent study found that last year, less than 7% of websites use Flash, although, back in 2011, 28.5% of websites were using the tech.

Adobe wrote in a blog post: “Given this progress, and in collaboration with several of our technology partners – including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla – Adobe is planning to end-of-life Flash.

Animation and video tools

“Specifically, we will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020 and encourage content creators to migrate any existing Flash content to these new open formats.

“Adobe will remain at the forefront of leading the development of new web standards and actively participate in their advancement. This includes continuing to contribute to the HTML5 standard and participating in the WebAssembly Community Group.

“And we’ll continue to provide best in class animation and video tools such as Animate CC, the premier web animation tool for developing HTML5 content, and Premiere Pro CC.”

Google’s Director of Engineering also said at a security conference in San Diego that the number of people using Chrome with Flash has decreased from 80% in 2014 to less than 8% in 2018.

Microsoft’s commercial cloud offering edges above US$600billion, pushing the company closer (or higher) than the US$20billion annualised run-rate goal Microsoft set in 2015.

Microsoft executives have said they aim to meet its US$20billion goal in 2018 hitting an annualised revenue run rate of US$18.9billion in its fourth quarter.

KeyBanc analyst, Brent Bracelin, said to MarketWatch: “We have been impressed by solid execution and strong customer adoption of Microsoft’s cloud applications and platforms.

“Reaching US$20billion would imply the commercial cloud mix could cross over 20% of revenue for the first time in the first quarter of fiscal 2018, up from 5% in early 2015, similar to the multiyear transition at Adobe Systems we still view Microsoft in the early innings of cloud migration.”

According to a report by Senrio, remote security is affecting millions of IoT devices; making them vulnerable to cyber security attacks.

The company found issues in Axis Communications security cameras, with the problem called gSOAP ‘lying deep’ in its communication layer.

A tool kit created by Genivia called gSoap, which has been downloaded over 1 million times, reported that most downloads are likely to be involved by developers, including large companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Abode and Xero, according to Tech News World.

Genivia’s CEO, Robert van Engelen, announced that Genivia issued a new patch for gSOAP within 24 hours of being alerted about the vulnerability, noting customers of the issue.

“The trigger happens when at least 2GB of XML data is uploaded to a web server. This bug was not discovered by proprietary static analysis tools or by our source code users who looked at the source code since 2002,” explained van Engelen.

Van Engelen also noted that the bug was triggered by an intended integer underflow, followed by a second unintended integer underflow.

Dustin Childs, CEO at a security software company called Trend Micro, concluded that vendors need to audit components appropriately for security purposes.
