US states planning to bring back facial recognition tech

Due to a rise in criminality in the United States, several states are planning to bring back facial recognition technology.

Although this type of technology was banned, local police in states such as Virginia, California, and New Orleans, are trying to lift the ban and get the authorization to use facial recognition tech once again. It was originally banned due to its racial and gender discrimination, especially against people with darker skin color. Many groups and individuals have then lobbied to get the technology banned from public services.

However, with the crime rates on the rise again, there are plans to return the technology. To support this, the  National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has declared that facial recognition tech was now more accurate although the Department of Homeland Security found little variation in accuracy across skin tone and gender.
