The cloud is rising but on-premises databases are still strong

Despite the rise of the cloud, the on-premises database market is still going strong.

Indeed, a recent study by Gartner showed that companies spent an incremental $2.2 billion on on-premises database software in 2021, with around 95% of the IT market still firmly on-premises – including hardware, software, and services spending. Moving to the cloud might be slower than originally planned by many organisations.

Yet, it was found that 49% of the database market was claimed by the cloud. The slow move to the cloud can be explained by the costs associated as well as concerns about data security, infrastructures, and latency. Hence, on-premises workloads are still growing at a rate consistent compared to the past years, while the cloud is growing relatively faster.
