It was recently reported that Telstra would be launching a specialist compliance, detection, and response capabilities team for cybersecurity.

Indeed, as digital services are increasing rapidly, it is vital to secure and protect all digital environments from cyberattacks. The company is currently offering detection and response in its security operations centers.

It will then be using a cloud-based solution to reduce latency and limitations that often come with more complex perimeter-based security solutions.

An online forum that was used by the suspect of the El Paso shootings, had its services suspended by Cloudflare on Monday in an attempt to stop the spread of far-right messages that had been circulating on the site.

8chan, also known as Infinitechan, was left with no cloud protection services, making it vulnerable to an array of cyber-attacks that had the potential to shut down the entire site.

The gunman of the recent El Paso attack used the webpage to go on an alleged white nationalist rant before storming a Walmart and killing 22 people.

Support from other places

However, US-based firm, BitMigate (who were recently acquired by Epik.com), said they wanted to give cloud protection to 8chan and provide them with, “Bulletproof DDoS protection with a proven commitment to liberty.”

In 2017, BitMitgate also chose to deliver security to the neo-Nazi site, the Daily Stormer, after Cloudflare also stopped defense to its website.

In choosing to remove safeguarding from Infinitechan, the chief executive of Cloudflare Matthew Prince commented on Sunday, “Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit.”

8chan is currently down

Epik.com relies heavily on cloud infrastructure company, Voxility. After hearing that the BitMigate parent company had chosen to takeover 8chan, Voxility quickly cut off Epik.com, leaving 8chan unable to run.

However, despite the lack of support, the online forum is still fighting to find companies that will provide cloud support for it. Something which Alex Stemos, former chief security officer at Facebook and Professor at Stanford University’s Centre for International Security and Cooperation, is skeptical about.

He told the British newspaper, The Guardian: “We will see if they find someone else willing to host them before they get kicked off again… In the long run, there are a number of web hosts in Russia that charge a lot of money to host content that nobody else wants to host – that means 8chan would ultimately be much slower and much less effective.”

The impact of tech on the world

The move from cloud providers to cut ties with websites that associate with extremist right-wing viewpoints is reflecting on the higher level of responsibilities that tech companies are having on world politics and everyday occurrences in general.

A robot journalism project where computes write 30,000 stories a month for local media is going to be funded by Google.

The scheme that will be launched in 2018 will use human journalists with the Press Association (PA) News Agency, and will be funded £622,000 for the project, according to the BBC.

To automate reports about crime, health and employment, five people will use official open data sources.

The PA announced that Reporters and Data and Robots (Radar) would benefit “established media outlets”, independent publishers and local bloggers.

‘Cost effective ways to produce local stories’

“Skilled human journalists will still be vital in the process, but Radar allows us to harness artificial intelligence to scale up to a volume of local stories that would be impossible to provide manually,” said PA Editor, Pete Clifton.

University of London and the University of Munich’s Neil Thurman argued: “You can’t really cover local government through automation because it’s a lot about investigation, politics, personal relationships, who has said what to whom and so forth—it’s difficult to get that information in data feed form.”

Thurman also noted that he finds it difficult to see how automation is going to help provide additional coverage of local magistrates courts and crown courts.

Arriving in style, the DevOps Industry Awards are set to take the industry by storm, shining a light on both Dev and Ops teams bridging the gap between the two cultures. Entries will open 1 March.

The awards ceremony will take place 18 October.

Meet Keith Watson – our judge from ADP UK

Keith Watson, Director of DevOps at ADP UK, will be one of this year’s judges at the upcoming award ceremony. He will be looking for “good write ups that highlight the differences between Dev and Ops that need to be addressed, and how each organisation has bridged that cultural divide.”

“I enjoy hearing about other people’s journeys in DevOps. It’s always exciting to see how each company approaches DevOps because you can learn so much yourself from each award submission,” says Watson in response to being asked why he chose to become a judge.

When discussing ADP UK’s DevOps journey, Watson said, “We definitely have a lot further to go. Each team has made a lot of progress in different parts of the company. What we want to do is understand and replicate that progress on each product. We understand the benefits of moving towards continuous delivery and the need for an integrated approach in the deployment pipeline. We’ve implemented some of the cool tools and DevOps techniques, but we want to make that consistent across different products. We also want to make sure that it affects the whole of the deployment and release process rather than just parts of the pipeline.”

12 exciting categories to enter

You will be able to enter 12 different categories at the DevOps Industry Awards 2017, ranging from Best DevOps Automation Project to DevOps Team of the Year.

If you work in a specific sector, then there are also categories reflecting the Best Overall DevOps Project in Finance, Retail, Gaming, Public Sector or Communication.

The DevOps Industry Awards are here to stay

Being launched this year, entries for the DevOps Industry Awards, which celebrates companies, individuals and teams who have accomplished significant achievements in the DevOps space, open on 1 March 2017.

As a judge at this year’s DevOps Industry Awards, Watson firmly believes in the need for collaboration, as “there’s often a heavy emphasis in DevOps on the use of tools, but actually DevOps is also about collaboration across departments and cultures, including different geographies and time zones.

Entries need to be submitted by the 14th of July 2017, and the winners will be announced at the Gala Dinner on Wednesday 18 October 2017.
