Trade body, GSMA, has announced its first details of the Mobile World Congress 2018

Under the theme ‘Creating a Better Future’, the Mobile World Congress will be held on the 26 February – 1 March 2018 at Barcelona’s Fira Gran Via, where more than 108,000 professionals from across the global mobile industry will participate, showcasing their innovative products, services and technologies that are shaping the mobile world of today.

More than 2,3000 companies from 40 countries and regional pavilions will be attending the exhibition, including major brands: Accenture, Ericsson, Facebook, Google and HTC.

‘Life-enhancing services’

Eight ‘topic’ tours will be included within its programme: 5G & NFV; Connected World; Content; Emerging Tech; Enterprise; IoT Security; Mobile Advertising and Apps; and Retail and Digital Commerce.

Michael O’Hara, GSMA’s Chief Marketing Officer, said: “With more than 5 billion unique subscribers, mobile now connects over two-thirds of the world’s population. It is fuelling innovation, revolutionising industries and spurring exciting new opportunities, across both developed and developing markets.

“Mobile provides access to life-enhancing and, in some cases, life-changing services. Reinforcing our industry’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, mobile is providing lifelines to hope, reducing inequalities and preserving our world’s resources. We look forward to Mobile World Congress 2018 and showing how mobile is creating a better future – today.”

Around 67,500 technology-savvy consumers from 104 countries came to China this year to celebrate GSMA’s Mobile World Congress at Shanghai’s New International Exhibition Centre (SNIEC) on the 28 June–1 July.

To highlight industry developments, 10,000 people attended the conference, which included: 3,725 mobile operators, device makers, equipment providers, software companies and internet companies; 800 worldwide media professionals; 125 CEOs; 600 exhibitors and 55% of delegates who held senior-level positions within the industry.

“We introduced many new elements for this year’s event, particularly in our ‘experience halls’, which were open for four days for the first time. The show truly showcased mobile as the ‘human element’” said CEO at GSMA, John Hoffman.

“The technology is impacting nearly every aspect of daily life for billions of people around the world, including more than 2.7 billion mobile subscribers here in Asia, in areas as varied as healthcare, financial services, agriculture, transport, utilities and of course, entertainment,” he added.

GSMA also brought its ‘donation room’ programme to Shanghai, where exhibitors were able to donate unneeded furniture to asset local socially responsible entities.

By 2020, Chinese and Indian tech giants will take over 50% of all global mobile phone subscribers, according to the GSM Association (GSMA), a trade body that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide.

According to Computer Weekly, there will be roughly 753 million new mobile phone subscribers worldwide.

GSMA expect that by the end of the decade, China will account for 21% (155 million) of those subscribers, and India will account for 27% (206 million).

“Led by India and China, Asia’s mobile industry will be the main engine of global subscriber growth for the remainder of the decade, connecting almost half a billion new customers across the region by 2020,” said Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA.

“We are also seeing a dramatic shift to mobile broadband networks, particularly 4G, which is providing a platform for a rich range of innovative new services across both developed and emerging markets in the region. Meanwhile, advanced operators in Asia are set to become among the first in the world to launch commercial 5G networks before the end of the decade,” he added.

GSMA also noted that there is going to be a 3.1 billion increase in mobile subscribers from Asia-Pacific (APAC), accounting for around 66% of global growth to 75% by 2020.
