The US Supreme Court has dropped the Microsoft vs Department of Justice case over data privacy.

In December 2013, the case began as US federal law enforcements persisted on Microsoft disclosing emails and other private information used for drug trafficking activity.

Microsoft disagreed with all accusations, saying that the emails were stored in a data centre in Dublin, Ireland, and challenged the warrant.

In March 2018, the case was taken to the Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data (CLOUD) Act, which requires cloud providers to comply with court orders for onshore and offshore data.

Following this, the court dismissed the case, saying there is no longer a “live dispute” between the US and Microsoft on the legal changes.

Taking the court case into consideration, Microsoft has announced it has a new legislation regarding its cloud provider data privacy (to be continued).

Despite this, it’s likely that we will see more conflicts between US legal demands and foreign legal requirements in the near future.
