Google acquires Apigee

Google has announced that it is acquiring Apigee, a provider of application programming interface management. APIs are the mechanism which developers employ to interface and integrate with outside apps and services. They are extremely necessary for businesses, as companies use them to interact with partners and customers. It is predicted that US companies alone will spend nearly US$3 billion on API management by 2020.

Apigee’s significance within the business world

Apigee is already in use by many different companies, including AT&T, Burberry, Live Nation and Walgreens. These companies benefit from the use of digital interaction, which enables them to expand their consumer market.

Google believes that the addition of Apigee will increase the quality of its digital interactions, making it easier to implement and publicise APIs. Apigee was recently labelled a leader in the ‘Gartner Magic Quadrant for Application Services Governance’. It has also been recognised for its “completeness of vision”.
