It was recently reported that more than 170 android apps have been trying to scam people using cryptomining.

Indeed, it was found out that these apps didn’t do anything malicious but acted as shells to collect money from users by offering cryptomining services for a fee and then delivering nothing in return. Following this, Google removed its 25 scam apps on Google Play, however, the others are still accessible by everyone.

As cryptomining is rising, cybercriminals have started to use it in their scams, such as faking cryptomining services that don’t hold up their end of the bargain. Mobile users are the new targets, especially Android users, as Apple banned cryptocurrency mining from their devices.

Moreover, it was reported that most of the apps are paid, through one-time payments or subscriptions. This then allows cyber criminals to collect money and giving nothing in return. So far, the apps have stolen at least $350,000 from more than 93,000 people.
